Trinidad & Tobago, along with all former (and current) British colonies, celebrates the 170th anniversary of the the abolition of slavery this year. There is a packed calendar of events around the Emancipation Day holiday on 1 August, many hosted by the Emancipation Support Committee. 1 August also marks the conclusion of the Tobago Heritage Festival with a huge street parade.
Here are some of the highlights of this year's festivities (be sure to check press for full details):
- Tuesday 29 July: Grand Opening of the Ndere Lidj Yasu Omowale Emancipation Village at the Jean Pierre Complex in Port of Spain
- Wednesday 30 July: a full day of events including Youth Workshops, dance performances, and Pan & Kaiso show
- Thursday 31 July:
- Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Symposium during the day at the Hilton Trinidad & Conference Centre
- Lebo M (the voice and spirit of the Lion King) in concert with Ella Andall, Brother Resistance and the Network Riddum Band and the Continuum Dance Project featuring the works of Sonia Dumas on Thursday 31st July
- Friday 1 August:
- Emancipation Day, marked in Trinidad with opening prayers and libations at the All Stars Pan Yard (Duke Street, Port of Spain), followed by street parade from the Brian Lara Promenade to the National Stadium. Dance & music concert 2-7pm, followed by Flambeaux Procession back to All Stars Pan Yard.
- In Tobago, street parade in from Bon Accord to Crown Point to mark the end of the Tobago Heritage Festival
- Saturday 2 August: food fair and musical performances throughout the afternoon and evening
- Sunday 3 August:Emancipation Film Festival and music performances at the Village
